French Lessons
Is French Hard to Learn for Filipinos?
French is easier for Filipinos than you might expect, thanks to English and Spanish loanwords. Here is what will feel easy and what will take practice.
Short answer: no harder than for anyone else, and in some ways easier. Filipinos start with two advantages most learners do not have.
What makes it easier
You already know English. A huge share of English vocabulary came from French. Restaurant, menu, table, important, possible, different, question: you can read these in French on day one.
Filipino is full of Spanish-derived words. Spanish and French are cousins, so the family resemblance carries over.
- pamilya → famille
- numero → numéro
- telepono → téléphone
- problema → problème
- sabon → savon
- importante → important
You are used to switching languages. Most Filipinos move between two or three languages every day. That flexibility is a real skill.
What takes practice
- Pronunciation. Nasal vowels, the French "r" and the "u" sound do not exist in Filipino or English.
- Silent letters. French spelling and French sound are not the same thing. "Beaucoup" ends in a p nobody says.
- Gender. Every noun is masculine or feminine, and adjectives change to match.
- Verb endings. Each tense has several forms to memorise.
- Listening. Spoken French links words together, so it sounds faster than it is.
How long does it take?
For English speakers, language institutes commonly estimate several hundred hours of study to reach working proficiency in French, which puts it among the easier languages to learn. For basic travel and café conversation, a few months of steady practice is realistic.
What helps most
- Listen every day, even for five minutes.
- Speak out loud from the first week. Do not wait until you feel ready.
- Learn phrases, not word lists. Start with 20 phrases for ordering coffee.
