Jam Sessions for Shy Singers: Making Music in a Living Room
Like singing but hate being watched? A small living-room jam session is the easy way in. Here is how one works, and how to join one in Marikina.
Filipinos sing. At birthdays, in the shower, in the jeep. And yet plenty of people who love singing will never touch a karaoke microphone because everyone is looking. A living-room jam is the answer.
What a jam session is
A few people, a guitar or two, and a list of songs everyone half-knows. Somebody starts strumming. Whoever knows the words sings. Others hum, tap a table or just listen. There is no stage and no audience, because everyone is in it.
Why it works for shy singers
- You are never singing alone unless you want to.
- You are sitting down, at conversation volume.
- Mistakes vanish. Nobody stops the song.
- You can skip any song.
Jam etiquette
- Choose songs most people know.
- Keep it in a comfortable key. If it is too high, say so and move it.
- Share the guitar.
- Listen as much as you play.
- Phones away, unless you are looking up chords.
Good first songs
Anything with three or four chords and a chorus everybody knows. Classic OPM ballads and campfire standards work every time. If you play, bring the four basic chords and you are covered.
What about voice lessons?
If you want to train your voice properly, breathing, range and technique, a voice teacher or music school is the right place, and Marikina has them. See music lessons in Marikina. A jam is not a lesson. It is practice in being heard, which is the part most shy singers actually need.
Jamming at the studio
Our apartment studio has a couple of guitars and a corner by the south window where people read, strum and sing with the Rizal mountains in view. Small jams happen by arrangement. Message us if you would like to join one or bring friends. For bigger rooms and real microphones, check the open mics on the Marikina café events calendar.
