Wire Art for Beginners: Tools, Wire and Your First Three Shapes
Wire art needs only pliers and a spool of wire. Learn which wire to buy, the three basic moves, and three easy first projects to bend at home.
Wire art is drawing with a line you can pick up. It is cheap, quiet, portable and oddly calming, and it is one of the things always on our studio table.
What you need
- Wire. Soft aluminium or copper craft wire. Around 1 mm thick is a good start: it holds a shape but bends by hand.
- Round-nose pliers for loops and curves.
- Flat-nose pliers for gripping and sharp bends.
- Cutters.
That is the whole toolkit.
Three basic moves
- The loop. Grip the end with round-nose pliers and roll your wrist.
- The sharp bend. Hold with flat-nose pliers and push the wire against the edge with your thumb.
- The wrap. Coil a thinner wire around a thicker one to join two parts without glue.
Three first projects
- Your name in one line. Write it in cursive on paper, then follow the line with wire. Do not cut until the end.
- A leaf. One loop for the outline, one line down the middle. Hang it by a window.
- A photo holder. A spiral on top, a straight stem, and a flat coil as the base.
Tips
- Straighten wire by pulling it through a folded cloth.
- Work from the spool. Cutting first always leaves you short.
- File or tuck sharp ends.
- Kinks are hard to remove. Bend slowly.
Where it goes next
Wire pairs well with other materials: beads, air-dry clay, resin charms. We sell small wire sculptures from the studio, and we are happy to show you how they are made. Send us a message if you would like to try.
Quick answers

Soft aluminium or copper craft wire about 1 mm thick. It bends easily by hand and holds its shape.
Is wire art hard to learn?
No. Three moves, the loop, the bend and the wrap, are enough to make simple shapes on your first day.
