A Journaling Hangout With No Vendors: Just Tables, Pens and Coffee

Some people just want to sit and journal together without a market around them. Here is what a simple, small journaling hangout in Marikina looks like.

Big journaling events are lovely. They often come with stationery vendors, raffles and a crowd. But one question we saw on Threads stuck with us: is there a hangout that is only a hangout, with no vendors or anything? Somewhere to sit down, open a notebook and write next to other people.

That is easy to do, and it is the kind of thing a home studio is good at.

What a simple journal hangout looks like

  • Four to six people. Small enough to share one table.
  • Two hours. Long enough to finish a spread, short enough to stay fun.
  • No programme. People arrive, say hello, write, show their pages if they want to, and leave.
  • Shared supplies in the middle. Tape, glue, stickers people are happy to give away.
  • Coffee or tea. Because of course.

A loose structure, if you want one

  1. First 15 minutes: settle in, swap names, look at each other's pens.
  2. Next hour: quiet writing. Talking is allowed but not required.
  3. Last 30 minutes: show and tell, only for those who want to.

What to bring

Your current journal, a pen, and anything you would like to trade or share. Shy people are welcome. Writing quietly next to others counts as participating.

Quick answers

What happens at a journaling hangout?

People sit together and write or decorate their journals, share supplies, chat a little and show their pages if they want to. There is no set programme.

Can I come to a journal meetup alone?

Yes. Most people do. Journaling is an easy activity to share with strangers because nobody has to make conversation the whole time.
