9 Questions to Ask Before You Book Any Workshop
Before paying for an art, craft, music or language workshop, ask these nine questions about price, materials, group size, and what you take home.
Workshop listings are written to sell seats. Most leave out the details that decide whether you will enjoy the day. Ask these before you pay, whether it is pottery, painting, guitar or French.
- What exactly is included in the price? Materials, tools, snacks, firing or finishing? "Materials included" should mean everything.
- How many people will be there? Six learners get attention. Thirty get a demonstration.
- Is it for beginners? If you have never done it, make sure nobody expects you to have.
- What will I take home? A finished piece, a work in progress, or only the experience?
- When do I get it? Clay and resin need days to dry or cure. Ask about pick-up or delivery.
- How long is the session? And does that include set-up and clean-up?
- What should I wear or bring? An apron? Closed shoes? Your own instrument?
- What if I cannot make it? Refund, credit or reschedule? Ask before, not after. This matters during typhoon season.
- Who is teaching? A practising artist or musician will usually have work you can look at.
Signs of a good workshop
- Clear answers to all nine questions
- Photos of past sessions with real people in them
- A small group size stated up front
- No pressure to buy extras
Signs to be careful
- Vague pricing, or "DM for details" with no details after you DM
- A much bigger group than the venue can hold
- Payment demanded with no reschedule policy
Our answers
Since we are asking you to ask, here are ours. CHQ Home Arts Studio runs small sessions by arrangement in a home studio in Marikina. Materials are provided. Sessions are for beginners unless you tell us otherwise. Groups are small because the apartment is. The price depends on the medium and the number of people, and we tell you before you confirm. If heavy rain makes travel unsafe, we move the date.
Send an inquiry with the nine questions and we will answer every one. For an overview of what is available around the city, see our Marikina workshops guide.
Quick answers
What should I ask before booking a workshop?
Ask what the price includes, the group size, whether it suits beginners, what you take home and when, the session length, and the reschedule policy.
Are materials usually included in art workshops?
Often, but not always. Confirm whether paper, paint, tools and finishing are all covered before you pay.
